Marie O'Sullivan

Marie O

Marie started singing with Sr Anne Murphy’s Priory Singers, Holywood, Co Down, with whom she recorded two discs of sacred and Irish songs and travelled extensively to local and international choral festivals and took part in British Youth Choir concerts in Wales, Scotland and England. She then went on to study singing with the much respected singing teacher, Frank Capper MBE and sang regularly at his fortnightly Performers’ Club concerts at Queen’s University, Belfast both as a soloist and in ensembles.

After wining the Soprano Gold Medal at the Dublin Feis Ceoil, she was much in demand as a guest soloist with music societies and choirs throughout Ireland and made her television debut on the BBC As I Roved Out series singing unaccompanied Irish songs. Marie’s first love of opera then led her to singing leading roles in opera with Opera Northern Ireland, The Studio Opera Group, Castleward Opera, Belfast Operatic Society, St Agnes’ Choral Society, Downpatrick Opera Fringe and most recently in Menotti’s The Telephone for Glenarm Opera in 2006.

Marie started to teach voice in 1997 and has taught a wide variety of students at Assumption Grammar School, Ballynahinch, Mater Dei Institute, Dublin, Ulster College of Music, Belfast School of Music, St Mary’s University College and Carrickfergus Grammar School. She has presented ‘Can’t Sing, Won’t Sing’ workshops for the Charles Wood Summer School, Armagh as well as running a ‘Saturday Singing Club’ for singers of all ages, abilities and style of music. With a special interest in voice care and healthy voice use, Marie has worked with various local singing groups and choirs to promote good vocal habits and healthy singing.

In 2000, Marie toured Bavaria with the Belfast chamber choir, Cappella Caeciliana and also sang on their acclaimed first CD Cantate Domine. In 2002, Marie founded Tosini (Teachers of Singing in Ireland), the only professional development organisation dedicated to training singers and teachers of singing in Ireland. Her work with Tosini has given her opportunities to study with some of the leading voice teachers in Europe and she is currently a Pathway Candidate for the Certified Master Teacher qualification for Estill International with Reeve & Møller.

Marie also has a busy teaching practice working one-to-one and with groups and will be the vocal coach with BBC Blast NI’s Bandwagon project at the end of August. She is also wife to Michael and mum to Ciaran, 17 years, Niamh-Aine, 14 years and Caoimhe, 7 years.
